A recent campaign from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons has been highlighting the plight of Greyhounds in the UK. Their report estimates that 10,000 ex-racing greyhounds are ‘unaccounted’ for.
Under existing UK legislation, any person can use a bolt gun to destroy a greyhound, if they are the legal owner. Many of these unaccounted for Greyhounds have been destroyed by their owners because they’re not fast enough, have injuries or become pregnant. Most of these Greyhounds are less than 5 years old.
This heartbreaking law means that thousands of healthy Greyhounds are killed every year because of their inability to race. It’s a massive problem with Greyhounds but there’s also a wider problem with euthanasia of older dogs as a whole. People are often too quick to resort to euthanasia, often because a dog becomes more difficult to care for, or requires more veterinary attention.
The increased need for care and cost involved can both be significantly minimised by joining a payment plan such as Clockhouse’s Paws & Claws Club. Not only does it ensure your pet gets regularly seen by a vet to spot problems early on, it also spreads the cost of your pet’s care and gives you discounts on treatments.
It’s also worth taking out insurance while your dog is young and healthy.
While keeping an older dog may carry additional responsibilities, it can be an incredibly rewarding experience and more often than not, there’s a desire to keep a family pet around for as long as possible.
While the RCVS fights the law on Greyhound euthanasia, we recommend that you visit your vet before considering euthanising your pet.
Our vets will always do everything they can to ensure that your pet lives a happy, healthy life for as long as possible and can give you advice and guidance on caring for an older pet. For more advice, call us on 01453 752555.
